Discovering this four-member indie pop band from Brooklyn, HAERTS was on of my musical finds for the year. Releasing their first EP in 2013 and touring with bands such as Shout Out Louds and St. Lucia this band has garnered a solid following – now they have a debut album release and it’s a must listen.
Beginning with the title track “Heart”, lead singer Fabi decrees she will “Never Break Your Heart” and sets the overall tone for what is about to follow in the rest of the album. This album takes you on a journey accompanied with electronic beats and synths, yet it keeps the tone soft and tender. By the end you really hope Fabi and the rest of the band won’t leave you.
“Wings” is the second track on this album and it was previously released as a single back in 2012, receiving significant airplay in the U.S. at the time, garnering mainstream recognition and ultimately culminating in them being signed to Columbia Records.
It’s “Hemiplegia” that is the stand-out track for me. With a killer melody and chorus that you definitely put on repeat, it’s without doubt a powerhouse track and I truly hope it’s destined for our radio waves soon.
On the lighter side “No One Needs To Know” provides the interlude before the second act kicks in and takes us back on our soft and somber journey. “Giving Up” catapults us back into the second act with an upbeat tempo that rocks throughout the track as the pop hook chorus has us singing along. “Lights Out” slows down right down before we are hit with “Be The One” which has a light and funky feel that conjures imagines of cruising down the highway with the windows down and the song bursting loudly though the speakers on a summer day.
“All the Days” has Fabi float through the chorus as she haunts us with her lilting tone while “Hope” rounds out the album with a country feel ballad and brings our musical journey with HAERTS to a fitting end. Band members Nini Fabi (vocals), Ben Gebert (keyboard), Garrett Ienner (guitar) and Derek McWilliams (bass) have created a strong debut offering and I will be watching this group in the future.
